Eça de Queirós (1845-1900) was a Portuguese writer. "The Crime of Father Amaro" was his first major work, an initial landmark of Realism in Portugal. It was considered the best Portuguese realistic novel of the nineteenth century. He was the only Portuguese novelist to achieve international fame at that time. He was harshly criticized for his criticism of the clergy and his own country. Social criticism coupled with psychological analysis appears in the books "The Cousin Basílio", "The Mandarin", "The Relic" and "The Maias".
